On October 17, 2005 HP announced the release of their 31 page per minute (ppm) Color LaserJet 4700 series printers as a replacement for the 22 ppm 4650 series, which had been discontinued.

The supplies set is made up of four separate toner cartridges, all chipped. The cartridges yield up to 10,000 pages for color and 11,000 for black. These are physically very similar to those used in the CP4005 printers, and most of the cartridge components are interchangeable. Only the chip and toner fill weights differ.

Although the 4700 and HP Color LaserJet 4730 MFP cartridges have many similarities they are not identical, and they are designated by different OEM cartridge SKUs. Some replacement components will work in both cartridges, but not all. For example, the HP46PCR-OS is qualified for use in HP 4700 cartridges, but is NOT qualified for use in 4730 cartridges.
